Trojans lose WCC opener; leading scorer

The New Prague Trojan girls basketball team lost a Wright County Conference contest to Orono Thursday, Jan. 12, and in the process also lost its leading scorer as Maizie Deihl suffered a broken wrist. Two days later the Trojans regrouped and defeated Rochester Mayo in an important game in terms of Section 1AAAA seeding.

New Prague (9-7, 1-1 WCC) is scheduled to host Delano Friday, Jan. 20, and will host Chaska Saturday, Jan. 21, in a makeup game. That game is scheduled for 3 p.m.

The Spartans continued to hammer on the Trojans, taking a 29-point lead at one point and heading into the locker room with a 37-16 halftime lead. New Prague regrouped in the second half, but couldn’t find their way out of the huge hole they had dug in losing 60-46.

The Trojans not only were without Deihl for most of the game, but starter Emily Russo sat out with a knee injury. The Trojans hope to have Russo back for this weekend’s games. Deihl is expected to be out between four to six weeks, and the Trojans hope to have her back in action for the playoffs, which begin March 1.
