Trojans place 16th at Christmas tourney

The New Prague Trojan wrestling team remained unbeaten following a pair of dual meet wins last week, then entered the Minnesota Christmas Tournament, where they finished 16th in a 36-team field.

The tournament, in Rochester, featured many of the top-ranked teams in Minnesota, as well as powerhouses from several other states. The Trojans had two athletes place third.

New Prague (10-0) was scheduled to host a triangular with Le Sueur-Henderson and Blue Earth on Tuesday, Dec. 18. They will travel to Fargo, ND, for the Rumble on the Red Tournament Friday and Saturday, Dec. 28 and 29, at the FargoDome. The tournament features more than 50 high school teams from as far away as New Mexico, as well as JV and youth competition, and will have competition simultaneously on 19 mats.

New Prague Triangular The Trojans hosted Waseca and Tri-City United in a triangular Tuesday, Dec. 11, and won both matches by a decisive margin.

Trojans 65, Bluejays 15 New Prague defeated Waseca for the second time this season, by a 65-15 score. New Prague won the first five matches, two of them by forfeit, and took 11 of the 14 matches.

Winning by fall for the Trojans were Sam Reyant (106 pounds), Griffin Parriott (132), Richard Reinartz (152), Joe Heinz (160), Nathan Preston (220) and Zach Lafavor (285). Winning by technical fall was Tanner Rutt (113), while forfeit wins were awarded to Chase Logelin (120), Trevor Skogerboe (126), Steve Kvam (145), and Mitch Gullickson (195).

Trojans 67, Titans 11 New Prague won 12 of 14 matches, including a pair of wins against highly rated wrestlers from Tri-City United. Morgan Parriott (145) scored a 3-2 win over Mason Brownlee and Joe Heinz (160) pinned Josh Selly.

Parriot’s win over Brownlee was somewhat controversial. Brownlee was working to score a takedown when time expired, but the referee did not get the signal that the match was over and awarded the takedown to Brownlee. After consulting with the secondary official, it was decided that the takedown had come after time expired.

Winning by pinfall for the Trojans were Reyant (106), Blaine Bornholdt (120), Griffin Parriott (132), James Berg (138), Heinz (160), Patrick Zeimet (170) and Andrew Maruska (182). The Trojans had decisions by Morgan Parriott (145) and Reinartz (152), and forfeit wins from Rutt (113), Gullickson (195) and David Bauer (220).

Minnesota Christmas Tourney New Prague had a strong showing in the Minnesota Christmas Tournament, held Friday and Saturday, Dec. 14 and 15, at Rochester Community and Technical College.

St. Michael-Albertville won the 34-team meet with 256.5 points, nine points better than Apple Valley.

New Prague placed 16th. Trojan coach Greg Tikalsky noted that 14 of the 15 teams that finished ahead of New Prague were ranked either in their class or in their state.

Two Trojans placed third in the tournament, the only two Trojans to earn a placing. Griffin Parriott lost his first round match to Brock Morgan of Apple Valley 5-1, then won six straight matches to finish third. Along the way, he had another match with Morgan, defeating him 1-0. He beat Zach Siegle of Scott West 3-2 in the third place match.

Preston won his first round match with a 19-second pin, then lost to Conan Sandberg of St. Francis 9-1. He then won his next five matches, including a return bout with Sandberg. He defeated Justin Davis of Centennial in the third-place match by a 4-3 score.

Two Trojans went 3-2 at the tournament; Berg (132), and Reinartz (138). Morgan Parriott (145) went 2-2; while Heinz (160), Cameron Schmitz (170), Maruska (182), Gullickson (195) and Lafavor (285), all went 1-2.
