Trojans ready for 2AAA playoffs
The New Prague Trojans closed out their regular season by facing Chaska, a team that at the time was ranked No. 1 in the state, and gave them a challenge before falling in four sets. Scores were 25-23, 25-15, 24-26, 25-13.
In taking a set from the Hawks, the Trojans did something only six other teams had done this year. The Hawks finished the season with a 24-2 record, losing just 10 sets, four of those to Eagan. Chaska lost to Eagan on Saturday in their own tournament and dropped to No. 2 in the final poll released this week. They received the No. 1 seed in the Section 2AAA playoffs.
“We played solid in both sets 1 and 3,” said Coach Angie Andersen. “Playing a top-ranked team brought out a lot of fight and some great teamwork among the players. I am happy with our performance and look forward to the section tournament.”
As the No. 8 seed, New Prague will host No. 9 seed Shakopee in the first round of the section tournament. That game was scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23, after this edition of The New Prague Times went to press. Go to newpraguetimes.com for results.
Should the Trojans get past Shakopee, they will be rewarded with a rematch with the No. 1-seed Hawks. It would be the third meeting of the season between the two teams. Chaska also defeated New Prague in the Marshall Tournament in September.
In last week’s match, the Trojans were led offensively by Marissa Ekness and Sydney Foss, who had 10 and 9 kills respectively. Alex Jendersee added seven and Melanie Clausen four as the Trojans had a balanced attack. Emma Hughes had 32 set assists.
Foss added two aces, going 10-of-10 serving. Hughes was 11-of-11.
Defensively, the Trojans had two blocks each from Foss, Ekness, Lexi Johnson and Jendersee. Foss had 14 digs and Ekness had 11 while Hannah Erickson had seven.
