Trojans take 3rd at Tartan Tournament

The New Prague Trojan softball team took third place at the Tartan Invitational Saturday, May 1, winning two of three games. The Trojans also dropped a pair of Missota Conference contests last week.

New Prague (6-8, 4-4 Missota) was scheduled to face two tough squads this week, playing at No. 9 Shakopee Tuesday, May 4, and at No. 5 Prior Lake Friday, May 7. The Trojans are at Northfield Tuesday, May 11, and host Hutchinson Thursday, May 13.

Tigers 3, Trojans 1

New Prague spotted Farmington a 3-0 lead, allowing single runs in the second, third and fourth, and lost to the Tigers 3-1 Tuesday, April 27.

The Trojans managed just six hits in the contest, two of them off the bat of Jess Hoffman. Hoffman scored the Trojans' lone run, leading off the seventh inning with a triple and scoring on a base hit by Katie Olson.

Kyla Schapekahm, Rochelle Koehnen and Ashley Wagner had the other Trojan hits.

Schapekahm allowed three runs on six hits and struck out seven in taking the loss.

Stars 2, Trojans 1

After five scoreless innings, the Trojans drew first blood with a run in the sixth. Justine Otremba led off with a single, stole second and scored on a hit by Schapekahm.

But Holy Angels parlayed an error, a hit batter, sacrifice and two base hits into two runs to take the lead in their half of the sixth.

The Trojans threatened in the seventh, but the potential tying run was thrown out at home on a perfect strike from the Stars' left fielder to end the game.

Otremba had two hits, while Schapekahm and Kalee Torp had the others. Schapekahm allowed just three hits and two runs, one earned, while striking out four.



Trojans 13, Zephyrs 4

New Prague opened the Tartan Invitational with a 13-4 win over Mahtomedi.

Kalee Torp led the Trojans' offense with three hits and three runs scored while driving in two. Schapekahm, Alex Perkinson, Jess Hoffman and Lee Manthe had two hits each, while Wagner and Sam Goblirsch each had one. Hoffman was the winning pitcher, allowing seven hits and four runs in five innings. Schapekahm pitched two innings of relief, allowing four hits and striking out two.



Irish 6, Trojans 1

A five-run first inning was the difference as Rosemount defeated the Trojans 6-1 in the semifinals in Oakdale. Schapekahm settled down after the first inning to allow just one more run. She struck out six and gave up 15 hits.

New Prague's scored its run in the seventh when Olson doubled and scored on a sacrifice by Becky Kollasch. Schapekahm, Torp, Hoffman, Goblirsch, Rochelle Koehnen and Ashley Wagner also had hits.

Trojans 13, Winhawks 2

New Prague came out swinging, scoring six runs in the first in a 13-2 win over Winona to take third place. The Trojans had 17 hits.

Amber Hoffman went 3-for-4 to ignite the Trojan attack. Schapekahm, Torp, Perkinson, Goblirsch and Otremba had two hits each and Kollasch, Jess Hoffman, Manthe, Wagner and Koehnen had one.

Schapekahm allowed eight hits and two runs while striking out four to take the win.
