Trojans wrestlers beat Farmington, Andover

The New Prague Trojan wrestling team competed in meets at Farmington and Rosemount last weekend, coming away with two wins and three losses.

The Trojans Feb. 1 triangular with Le Sueur-Henderson and Hutchinson has been postponed due to the state-wide wrestling shutdown. No makeup date has been set. The next scheduled match is the Trojans' season finale on Friday, Feb. 9, at home against Prior Lake.

Trojans 39, Tigers 36

New Prague went up against the host Farmington Tigers in a Missota Conference match and took a 39-36 win, going to 2-1 in the conference.

After the teams split a pair of forfeits, New Prague won the next six matches, three by forfeit. They got pins from Kody Dolezal (119 pounds) and Ryan Schmitz (135) and a decision by Alex Minette (125). Minette was tied with his opponent 4-4 in the third period when he scored an escape and then a takedown in the final minute to take the 7-4 win.

Farmington went on to win the next six matches, two by forfeit, but fell short of the Trojans by three points.

Spartans 46, Trojans 28

Rochester Mayo won the final three matches to break open a close meet and take a 46-28 win over the Trojans Friday at Farmington

The lead changed hands five times in this match. After Mayo took a decision at 103, Aaron Redding got a pin at 112 to give the Trojans a 6-3 lead.

Mayo came back with two wins to take a 13-6 lead, but Erick Pendergast (130) got a first period pin and Schmitz (135) took a forfeit win to give the Trojans the lead. Aaron Becker (140) took a 9-1 major decision to make it 22-13 New Prague.

The Spartans regained the lead with two pins and a major decision, making it 29-22.

The Trojans' Eric Grabosky, back after missing more than a month with an injury, got a pin for New Prague at 171, pulling the Trojans to within a point.

Mayo got two pins and a technical fall in the final three matches to claim the win.

Royals 41, Trojans 39

Hopkins won the final two matches to take a 41-39 win over New Prague in the first round of the Rosemount Quadrangular Saturday.

Redding (103) got the Trojans off on the right step with a pin in 35 seconds, but New Prague forfeited at 112, then Hopkins got a pin at 119. Minette (125) pinned his man to tie it at 12-12.

Schmitz (135) earned a 9-3 decision and Pendergast pinned his man at 140. Jon Vlasak (152) followed with a pin in the final second of the first period to make it a 27-18 lead for the Trojans.

Hopkins scored a technical fall at 152 and a pin at 160 to regain the lead, but New Prague got it right back with a pair of wins, by Grabosky at 171 and Brad Hartman at 189.

However, a Hopkins' pin at 215 and a Trojan forfeit at 285 swung the score back in Hopkins' favor.

Trojans 49, Huskies 30

New Prague broke open a close contest with six straight wins on its way to a 49-30 win over Andover at Rosemount Saturday.

The team split a pair of forfeits before the Trojans took two major decisions, by Dolezal (119) and Minette (125), giving them a 14-5 lead.

The Huskies got a forfeit win at 130 and a pin at 135 to take an 18-14 lead.

But the Trojans went on an extended run that put the match out of reach. Becker got things rolling with a pin at 140, and Vlasak (145) followed with a 15-0 technical fall. Roger Sirek (152) picked up a win with a pin, and Kevin Olson got a forfeit win. Eric Grabosky (171) followed with a 25-second pin, and the Trojans got another forfeit win at 189.

The Huskies got a pin at 215 and a forfiet win at 285.

Irish 42, Trojans 33

Rosemount came from behind by winning the final three matches, defeating New Prague 42-33.

The two teams traded the lead several times in this match. Redding got a pin at 103, but Rosemount got a forfeit win and a major decision to take a 10-6 lead.

Minette pinned his man at 125 pounds to make it 12-10 New Prague, but the Irish got a forfeit win to regain the lead.

Schmitz got a pin in 35 seconds at 135 pounds. Pendergast (140) followed with a 9-2 decision and Vlasak (145) with a pin in 2:30.

The Irish scored a pair of wins, by major decision and pin, to pull to within a point, but Grabosky (171) scored a pin in 24 seconds, giving the Trojans a 33-26 lead.

After scoring a major decisoin at 189, the Irish took the lead for good with a pin at 215. The Trojans forfeited at 285.
