Union Hill, St. Patrick win in D-R-S Blue playoffs; now competing in Region 6C

Union Hill and St. Patrick won in the Dakota-Rice-Scott League's recent Blue Division double elimination playoffs and are competing in the Region 6C tourney this week.

The results:

St. Patrick 3, New Market 2

Mike Goldsmith drove in two runs with singles and Jeff Bjerke, Matt Ambroz and Adam Almich hit doubles which figured in the scoring as St. Patrick edged New Market 3-2 at Elko Tuesday, July 25.

Bjerke led off with a double in the second inning, Wade Schuknecht singled and Ambroz doubled for the first run.

In the third frame, Josh Simon hit a triple and scored on Goldsmith's first single.

The winning run came in the last of the ninth as Almich doubled, Simon advanced him with an infield grounder and Goldsmith's second single was the game winner.

New Market's runs were unearned and came in the fifth inning. Jeremy Wieland was safe on an error and Brad Fredrickson Sr. tripled for a run. Fredrickson then scored when Garrett Felder was safe on an error.

Fredrickson led the Muskies with two hits; and Bjerke and Schuknecht were multiple hitters for St. Patrick.

Both starting pitchers went the distance. Dunker was the winner, allowing five hits and striking out six.

Union Hill 3, Veseli 0

Rick Bell of Union Hill and Joe Friedges of Veseli staged a pitcher's duel at the Union Hill park on Wednesday evening, July 26.

Each pitcher allowed but five hits, all singles.

The Bulldogs were the winners of a 3-0 shutout, scoring an unearned run in the sixth inning, and two earned runs in the seventh.

Bell was safe on a one-out error in the sixth, advanced on Adam Giesen's hit through the infield and scored on Jeff Bruder's two-out singled to left.

In the seventh inning, John Masberg opened with a walk, Matt Sticha's sacrifice bunt moved Masberg to second, and Phil Giesen's single put runners on first and third. Jesse Bastyr then hit a sacrifice fly to center field, Masberg scoring after the catch, and Bell hit a single to right field with Giesen scoring.

Veseli left nine runners on base and had players in scoring position four times. The best opportunity was in the eighth inning when the Warriors loaded the bases with one out, but a double play ended that threat.

Steve Olson of Veseli had two hits and Bell had two Union Hill hits.

Union Hill 3, St. Patrick 0

Matt Sticha threw a 10-strikeout one-hitter against St. Patrick at Union Hill on Friday night, July 28 as the Bulldogs beat the Irish, 3-0.

Sticha faced only 30 batters and walked three. The only hit off him was a single by Matt Pexa.

Adam Giesen singled for Union Hill in the fourth inning, stole second and scored on Jeff Bruder's hit.

In the fifth inning, catcher John Masberg led off with a home run to make it 2-0.

The third run came in the eighth as Tom Carpentier hit a double and scored on Brian Giesen's single.

Phil Giesen had two hits for Union Hill.

New Market 7, Veseli 5

The Muskies rallied for five runs in the seventh inning to overtake a Veseli lead and produce a 7-5 win at Elko, ending Veseli's season.

Brad Fredrickson singled in the seventh and after a fielder's choice, Tom Chies and Jeremy Wieland both singled. Three errors followed, allowing two more runs, and Kurt Ploog hit an RBI single during the five-run rally.

Brad Fredrickson Sr. hit a solo homer in the eighth for the final run.

Tom Chies led New Market hitters with three singles. For Veseli, it was Steve Olson and Dusty Steinhoff with two hits each. Olson hit a first-inning triple to drive in a run.

St. Patrick 11, New Market 0 (7 inn.)

Righthander Bill Dunker pitched a seven-inning five-hitter at Bonin Field on a very hot afternoon, Sunday, July 30, as St. Patrick blanked New Market, 11-0, to advance to Region play.

Dunker allowed five scattered singles, struck out only three, but had errorless support from his team.

Loose defensive play by the Muskies helped the Irish with St. Patrick coming up with two big innings.

There were only two hits during a six-run third inning. Singles by Josh Simon and Jeff Bjerke mixed in with three hit batters, three errors and a sacrifice fly by Wade Schuknecht saw St. Patrick take a 7-1 lead.

In the fifth, four more runs came across. Schuknecht led off with a homer over left. After a couple of miscues, Matt Pexa and Bjerke hit RBI singles to up the margin to 11-0.

Craig Boser of the Irish hit a second-inning double.

Region 6C Pairings:

The teams are playoff champions and runners-up from the D-R-S Blue Division, the Carver Central Red Division and the Carver Central White Division.

Wednesday, Aug. 2 - Carver vs. Arlington at Belle Plaine; St. Patrick at Brownton. Both games at 8 p.m.

Friday, Aug. 4 - Carver-Arlington winner at Union Hill at 8 p.m.; St. Patrick or Brownton at Le Sueur at 8 p.m.

Sunday, Aug. 6, 2 p.m. Winners bracket game. If Union Hill wins the Friday game it would be at Union Hill. Also, two losers bracket games, sites and teams to be determined.

Wednesday, Aug. 9, 8 p.m. One losers bracket game.

Friday, Aug. 11, 8 p.m - One losers bracket game.

Sunday, Aug. 13, 2 p.m. - State tourney qualifiers game. If a second game is needed it would follow.

Draftees for Region 6C play are: Union Hill - Jeremy Wieland of New Market and Dan Novak of Veseli; and St. Patrick - D.J. Damberger of New Market and Joe Friedges of Veseli.
