Veseli makes a move in DRS standings

Veseli won three of four games, including a holiday weekend sweep over archrival Lonsdale in their traditional home-and-home Fourth of July series, while Elko handed New Market its second league loss of the season in Dakota-Rice-Scott play during the past week. With a little more than two weeks remaining in the season, New Market has a threegame lead over St. Patrick for the league’s top spot as teams are jockeying for seeding position for the Region 3C playoffs, which get underway the week of July 25.

Tuesday, June 28 Warriors 11, Saints 9 Veseli pounded out six hits and scored seven runs in the first inning on their way to an 11-9 win over St. Benedict. Brett Kriha, Matt Perkinson, Ben Doerr, Nathan Simon, Nate Novak and Nolan Hodapp had hits in the big inning. Veseli scored four more in the second with base hits by Perkinson and Hodapp. Curt Brezina hit a two-run homer. St. Benedict scored three in the fifth with a threerun double by Cullen Bahn. They added one in the sixth and two in the eighth with hits from Tanner Oakes, Josh Malz and Jeremy Heitkamp. The Saints scored three more in the ninth before Perkinson came in to record the final two outs with the tying runs aboard. Cole Minnick took the loss. Brezina picked up the win and Perkinson the save.

Lakers 10, Bulldogs 4 Faribault scored four runs in both the fourth and sixth innings to take a 10-4 win over Union Hill Tuesday, June 28, in Faribault. Bryan Lindner, Adam Gill, Eric Bisek and Jeff Dietz each had two hits for Union Hill, with Gill getting two RBIs. Evan Knutson picked up the win for Faribault, while Dan Feneis took the loss.

Wednesday, June 29 Mallards 16, Warriors 2 Veseli scored a run in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead, but Montgomery scored in each of the next six innings to claim a 16-2 win over the Warriors Wednesday, June 29. Pat Lloyd, Eric Iverson, Tyler Bednar and Aaron Dwyer led the Mallard offense, including home runs by Iverson and Bednar. Veseli had just four hits, including RBI singles from Matt Perkinson and Ben Doerr and a double by Nolan Hodapp. Johnny Krocak pitched seven innings for the win, striking out eight. Ben Doerr went four innings in the loss. Mudcats 5, Aces 1 A three-run third inning powered Prior Lake to a 5-1 win over Lonsdale in Prior Lake Wednesday, June 29. Ben Morrisson homered and had four RBIs, while Kyle Schmidt and Jake Lehrer had two hits each for the Mudcats. Cole Pint had Lonsdale’s only RBI with a base hit in the seventh. He and Dylon Eisele had two hits each. Topher Rose got the win, going seven innings and striking out seven. Ryan Thompson took the loss.

Thursday, June 30 Aces 2, Saints 0 Lonsdale’s Joseph Sabal pitched seven shutout innings, but didn’t figure in the decision as the Aces scored twice in the bottom of the eighth for a 2-0 win over St. Benedict Thursday, June 30. Sabal allowed just four hits and struck out four. Michael Robohm pitched two perfect innings to get the win in relief. Ben Lazzari doubled in the bottom of the eighth and scored on a base hit by Justin Scheffler. Scheffler came home on a hit by Matt Tschida. Tschida and Cole Pint both had two hits for the Aces. Jeremy Heitkamp pitched seven-plus innings in taking the loss.

Express 5, Muskies 3 Elko scored three runs in the second inning to propel the Express to a 5-3 win over cross-town rival New Market Thursday, June 30. TJ Evanson and Jason Grimm singled to lead off the inning, then after a sacrifice bunt and a hit pitch, Kyle Kraska drove in the first run with a grounder to short. Kyle Kalina followed with a double to bring in a run. The third scored on a wild pitch. Nate Rost got the Muskies on the board with a base hit, scoring Steve McGuiggan. The Muskies tied it in the fourth with a Tyler Bergstrom double and a Kyle Henkemeyer single being the key hits. Elko got out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh with a double play, then scored two in the bottom half of the inning to claim the win.

Orioles 5, Bulldogs 0 New Prague topped Union Hill 5-0 using a strong pitching performance from Joel Zimmermann and one big inning. The Orioles scored four runs in the fifth inning after a strong start from Bulldogs’ pitcher Danny Beckius. Justin Novak opened the inning with a single, which was followed by a sacrifice bunt from Eric Wagner, who reached on a throwing error. Austin Bachman and Dust Steinhoff would follow the error with back-to-back singles, with Bachman picking up two RBIs. Zack Dubanoski doubled to score Bachman. Pinch runner Kevin Schmitz would also score in the inning on an error. James Fuerniss crossed the plate in the seventh for an insurance run for the Orioles. Bryan Lindner had two hits for the Bulldogs, Beckius, Adam Gill and Brady O’Neill also chipped in singles. Zack Sirek pitched a scoreless ninth for New Prague.

Coyotes 4, Sox 0 Shakopee scored twice in the first and added single runs in the seventh and eighth to claim a 4-0 win over Webster Friday, July 1. Tyler Sloss, Matt Theis and Tanner Graff had two hits each for the Coyotes, while Nate Nielsen had three of Webster’s five hits. Alex Johnson struck out nine in pitching a complete game shutout. Jeremy Wieland pitched eight innings and struck out six for the Sox.

Sunday, July 3 Warriors 7, Aces 1 Eric Steinhoff put the Warriors in front with an RBI single scoring Brett Kriha in the first inning, and Veseli added another in the second. They opened up the game in the fourth inning, scoring four runs - including a basesclearing double by Steinhoff. Kriha and Nathan Simon had two hits apiece and Steinhoff had three. Lonsdale had singles by Justin Scheffler, Ben Lazzari and Dylan Eisele, two hits from Jason Kirschman and three by Ryan Thompson. Phil Tisdel took the loss for the Aces and Matt Perkinson got the win for Veseli.

Muskies 3, Irish 2 New Market scored two in the second and one in the third, then held on for a 3-2 win at St. Patrick Sunday, July 3. Dave Stewart had two hits and scored a run for the Muskies, with Nate Rost, Nick Rost and Parker Holmstrom adding hits. Austin Isaacson and Seth Ambroz had two hits apiece for St. Patrick, with Josh Simon, Jordan Goracke, Brok Scwartzkopf and AJ Chappuis each getting one hit. Nate Rost went seven innings for the win, striking out 11. Derek Bergstrom earned the save, pitching two innings and allowing just one hit. Seth Ambroz took the loss for St. Patrick, despite allowing just five hits and striking out eight in eight innings.

Monday, July 4 Warriors 7, Aces 3 Veseli picked up the sweep in the traditional home-andhome holiday series in Veseli Monday, July 4. Lonsdale grabbed an early lead in the top of the second with an RBI single by Daniel Turner. The Warriors didn't waste much time getting the lead as Nolan Hodapp doubled off the wall, Mike Bartusek reached on an error. Cody Shimota singled to left scoring two, then Kriha drove in Shimota with a base hit. The Aces came back with a run in the third with a double by Cole Pint and a single by Jason Kirschman. The game remained 3-2 until Veseli broke it open in the seventh, scoring four more runs. John Solheid singled, Shimota had an RBI double, followed by Nathan Simon, Perkinson and Steinhoff all with singles. Ben Lazzari took the loss for the Aces, Curt Brezina pitched eight innings, getting the win.
