Volleyball team wins 2 at Hopkins

The New Prague Trojan volleyball team dropped a pair of matches last week, then competed in the Hopkins tournament, losing two matches and winning two.

The team has a 5-14 record (0-2 Wright County East). This week, they host Holy Family Catholic on Thursday, Oct. 6. On Saturday, Oct. 8, New Prague competes in the Cannon Falls Invitational. New Prague hosts Hutchison Tuesday, Oct. 11, and travels to Bloomington Jefferson on Thursday, Oct. 13.

Scarlets 3, Trojans 1 New Prague played what Coach Angie Andersen called a competitive, back and first match against Mankato West, losing 25-22, 18-25, 25-21, 25-22.

"Despite the loss, we had some players bring their best game," she said. "It was a big blocking night for us, with our middle leading the way."

Maggie O’Neill had 10 blocks, while Amanda Giesen added eight. Dani Friedges had six, Anna Eaton and Lexi Johnson had five each and Sophia Andersen four.

Eaton led the Trojans with 16 kills, while Andersen had 10 and Johnson nine.

Eaton had three ace serves, while McKenna Vacek, Friedges and Johnson had two each.

Vacek had 16 digs and Andersen 12, while Andersen had 24 assists and Brooke Buthe 10.

"Lexi Johnson had a great night on offense and has been a consistent player in our serve receive, and Brooke Buthe had a great night on defense," Andersen said.

Wildcats 3, Trojans 0 New Prague was swept by a stong Waconia team, 25- 14, 25-17, 25-21.

"We went in really excited and focused about playing well, but struggled to gain some ground in the first game out of serve receive," Andersen said. "We adjusted as the match went on, but still got outplayed."

Eaton had 10 kills and Andersen nine. Vacek, Eaton and Makenna Frerk each had a service ace. Vacek, Andersen, Eaton and Johnson each.....
