Wagner beats Malz in Scott Co.; Cook reelected sheriff in Rice Co.

There were a handful of contested county races in the area. Scott County had two commissioner races, Le Sueur County had three commissioner races and Rice County had a sheriff's race and a very close commissioner's race.

Scott County

In Scott County, incumbent First District Commissioner Joe Wagner of Jordan fended off a challenge from former commissioner Ralph Malz of Belle Plaine. Wagner received 4,591 votes, while Malz had 3,682.

Commissioners Jerry Hennen of Shakopee and Jon Ulrich of Savage were both reelected. Ulrich was unopposed.

County Attorney Pat Ciliberto was reelected without opposition and sheriff's deputy Kevin Studnicka was unopposed in his bid to succeed Sheriff Dave Menden. Also unopposed were Soil and Water Supervisors James Fitzsimmons and Jim Schwingler.

Le Sueur County

In Le Sueur County three incumbent commissioners were all returned to office. Joe Connolly of Le Sueur, Bob Culhane of Waterville and Bill Stangler of St. Peter all fended off challengers. In addition, six incumbent office holders all were reelected without opposition. They are Auditor Ron Germscheid, Treasurer Joseph Boettcher, Recorder David Sexe, Sheriff David Gliszinski, Attorney Brent Christian and Surveyor Rory Jensen.

Rice County

Incumbent Sheriff Richard Cook was reelected, with 11,968 votes, his opponent, Mark Murphy, had 9,644 votes. Incumbent Attorney G. Paul Beaumaster, Recorder Marsha Helen DeGroot and Auditor/Treasurer Fran Windschitl were unopposed for reelection.

There will be one new face on the Rice County Board. Galen Malecha appears to have won the open Second District seat, representing the Northfield Area. He defeated Betsey Buckheidt by 10 votes, 2,041-2,031. That vote total will automatically be recounted. In the fourth district, representing the Faribault area, Steven Bauer was unopposed for reelection.
