Welcome to Dozinky...

By Kim Gassner

Executive Director

New Prague Chamber of Commerce

On behalf of the New Prague Chamber of Commerce and the City of New Prague I want to welcome you to the 11th annual Classic Car Cruise and the 20th annual Dozinky festival. We are pleased you have decided to make New Prague part of your weekend plans. The Chamber staff, Roxy Krautkremer, Julie Bisek, Judy Deutsch, Kenzie Wilcox (who just headed off to college), and myself, the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and chamber members, New Prague businesses, city staff, local law enforcement and emergency personnel and many, many volunteers work hard to make the festival a fun-filled family event.

The Classic Car Cruise is a chance to revisit yesteryear and the cars from days gone by.

Dozinky is a Czech Harvest Festival, which recreates an “Old Country” feeling along Main Street New Prague.

Classic Car Cruise

Friday night kicks off the festivities with the annual Classic Car Cruise. We are expecting 400 cars and thousand of spectators. The cruise begins at 6:30 p.m. at the New Prague Intermediate School, works its way down Second Avenue N.W. and enters Main Street near Wells Fargo Bank. Friday, the food booths on Main Street open at 5 p.m. The New Prague Rotary will also be operating a food booth in the parking lot of the intermediate school, which will cater to cruise participants. Come early to stake out a prime cruise-viewing spot. While you are waiting for the cruise to begin, sample the many varieties of food available. The Chamber Beer Garden will open at 6 p.m., and will be the site of the street dance, immediately following the Classic Car Cruise. Tom Goetzinger, TRG Productions, will be the dance DJ.

Dozinky Festival

Saturday, Dozinky runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The street is transformed into an open-air market with vendor booths lining the sidewalks and a beer garden featuring authentic beer imported from the Czech Republic. You can sample tasty treats including traditional Czech dishes. There will also be many arts and crafts vendors as well as merchandise for sale from the Czech Republic. You will also see demonstrations of various art forms. As always the Scott County Historical Society will have crafts for kids to make-at no charge. Don’t forget to take home a Dozinky t-shirt or sweatshirt. You may purchase those in front of the chamber office.

The Parade of Farm Pride begins at noon, and the D&S kiddie pedal tractor pull, which begins immediately following the parade, is a huge hit with kids ages 4-11. The location is the parking lot of Strike Force Bowl. Children will also want to visit the petting farm and pony rides.

Don’t miss Artists Alley, located in the grassy area between ReRuns and Miller’s Tap, from 1-4 p.m. This event features local artists, entertainers and art projects for the kids to make and take home.

We have events for people of all ages. Specific events and times are listed elsewhere in this publication. There is also a map showing the locations of vendors and events. Entertainers will be strolling Main Street, and performing at three designated stage areas. Offerings will include traditional Czech singers, dancers and musicians, as well as an organ grinder with the obligatory monkey.

The Chamber of Commerce relies on the goodwill of local businesses who graciously give up their sidewalk space and storefronts to the festival. Many businesses and organizations sponsor the car cruise and festival. As you read the rest of this Dozinky guide of The New Prague Times, please take a minute to notice our sponsors.

If you are from the area, the next time you see one of the sponsors, take a moment to thank them. The support of our sponsors allows us to maintain the quality of Dozinky.

The Chamber of Commerce, local businesses and The City of New Prague want to thank you for “Czeching” out New Prague and attending the Classic Car Cruise and Dozinky. This event allows us to remember our ethnic heritage as well as have some fun. It is a time to look back over the past year and give thanks for a bountiful year in the New Prague area. Please help us to make this year’s event safe for everyone.

Mark your calendars for Friday and Saturday, Sept. 16 and 17, 2005. We hope to see you back again next year.
