Wellness policy implemented at New Prague Area Schools

Along with other school districts across the nation, the New Prague Area Schools has implemented a wellness policy, as mandated by the federal government.

The purpose of the policy is to assure a school environment that promotes and protects students' health, well-being, and ability to learn by supporting healthful eating and physical activity. The policy will be implemented in steps, with some of these changes already implemented over the last few years, such as offering baked chips instead of regular chips, lower fat items in ala carte lines, the offering of canned and fresh fruit daily and whole grain breads and the use of Trans-fat free oil.

This year students and parents will notice the following changes.

• Only diet pop will be available in pop machines, which will not be on until 3:30 p.m. Carbonated beverages will cost a quarter more.

• Bottled water will be available at all times.

• Healthier choices will be offered in the ala carte area and main line meals.

• There will no longer be 3 cookies for a dollar, but to meet the guidelines they will be sold individually

• Classrooms should encourage healthy choices for snacks, on field trips and on school picnics. Classroom celebrations should encourage healthy choices and portion control.

• There will be more nutrition education and physical education.

The school district policy also encourages parents to pack healthy lunches and snacks and refrain from including beverages and foods without nutritional value.

The policy was developed by a team with representation from administrators, principals, staff members, parents, and the school board.
