What's in a name?

By Chuck Kajer, Managing Editor

One of the biggest decisions new parents face is what to name their baby. A name is something that sticks with a person all their life, whether they like it or not. Yes, it can be changed, but very rarely is that done.

Often, names are handed down. If not first names, then certainly middle names. In our family, our three boys middle names are James, Ronald and Charles.

For many years, there was little imagination in names. Perhaps it was the 1940s to 1960s need to conform, but there were lots of kids named John, Jim and Mary. My freshman floor at St. John's, consisting of 80 students, had 10 guys named John.

Jenny and I thought we'd be unique when we named our first son. We were quite proud of ourselves that we chose the name Joshua
