When ‘old news’ seems too new

When I was young, I used to look at the news sections from years ago, like the “Tiimes Capsules” feature below. I always thought it was neat when I’d find an old story about one of my mom or dad’s friends, or someone I knew in those stories.

When I started working at The Times in 1990, I always thought it was neat when I’d find a story about one of my friends in those page from when we were kids.

So I’m not sure what to think when I’m looking at the 25-years ago column and actually seeing stories I remember covering in those pages. This week’s column includes two items about businesses being sold, and I remember covering both of those stories, and it also includes a story on a fire at Royal American Foods. I remember sitting at a city council meeting and hearing the firetrucks go out. I left the council meeting and discovered the fire was right downtown, and took photos.

I can remember some of these stories like they were yesterday. It kind of boggles the mind to think I’ve been at this job for that long.

Oh, I still get a kick out of seeing names of people I know in those pages... It just scares me that so many of them are people who are my age or younger.

* * * * * It’s tournament time, and the New Prague Trojan girls hockey team is ready to play in the Section 2A finals tonight (Thursday) at Gustavus Adolphus College. Coach Andrea Peterson’s squad will be taking on Mound Westonka for the program’s fifth state tournament berth. Good luck to the team, and to all the other Trojan teams as they compete in the post season.

Also, congratulations to Maria Berg for her fourth straight state tournament appearance in Nordic Skiing.

We’ll be covering all the Trojan teams in the coming weeks. Check for updated information at newpraguetimes. com.
