Wrestlers beat Bucs, Giants to stay unbeaten

The New Prague Trojans headed into the Christmas break winning two more dual meets, giving them an 11-0 record on the season.

New Prague hosted Blue Earth and Le Sueur-Henderson in a triangular Tuesday, Dec. 18. They defeated Blue Earth 35-34 and Le Sueur- Henderson 60-17.

The Trojans (No. 5, Class AA) travel to Fargo, ND, this weekend for the 65-team Rumble on the Red in the FargoDome. More than 1,400 varsity and JV wrestlers and 600 youth wrestlers will compete on 19 mats at the tournament.

After returning from Fargo, the Trojans’ next match will be Friday, Jan. 4, against Section 2AA rival Scott West in Belle Plaine. The Trojans are ranked No. 5 in Class AA and the Panthers are ranked No. 4.

Trojans 35, Buccaneers 34 After trailing early, the Trojans built a nine-point lead, then held on to defeat Blue Earth 35-34.

The dual was decided in the final match. The Trojans had a five-point lead and junior 285-pounder Zach Lavafor lost a major decision, 8-0, giving Blue Earth four points and keeping them a point short.

Winning by fall for the Trojans were Nick Knutson (120 pounds), Griffin Parriott (132), Morgan Parriott (152), and Nathan Preston (220).

The Trojans got a major decision from Tanner Rutt (113) and decisions from James Berg (138) and Joe Heinz (160).

Trojans 60, Giants 17 New Prague had a little easier time in their second match, defeating Le Sueur - Henderson 60-17.

The Trojans jumped out early with Sam Reyant winning by fall at 106. The eighth grader controlled the action throughout the match, and got the fall with just two seconds remaining in the final period.

New Prague never trailed. Other wins by fall came from Knutson (120), Darick Kvam (145), Pat Zeimet (170) and Mitch Gullickson (195).

The Trojans also got forfeit wins from Griffin Parriott (132), Berg (138), Richard Reinartz (152), David Bauer (220) and Zach Lafavor (285).
