Wrestlers raise record to 21-2 with 6 wins

The New Prague Trojan wrestling team has a 21-2 record as it prepares for the final weeks of the season.

The Trojans won six matches in three days last week, bringing home the Highway 13 Collision traveling trophy from Prior Lake and taking first place at the Tartan Duals.

New Prague's match at Farmington, scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 26, has been postponed for a week due to a skin issue. The match has tentatively been rescheduled for Thursday, Feb. 2, at Farmington. The next day, they face Northfield and Minneapolis Southwest at Northfield.

Trojans 45, Eagles 27

New Prague hosted Maple River and Delano in a triangular Thursday, Jan. 17, and won both ends of the meet.

In the first match against Maple River, the two teams split the first eight matches, with the Trojans gaining a three-point advantage at 21-18.

The Trojans won the next two matches to take a 33-18 lead, then split the final four matches for a 45-27 win.

The Trojans got falls from Nick Knutson (106 pounds), Morgan Parriott (145), Logan Giles (160), Andrew Maruska (170) and Nate Preston (195). They had forfeit wins from Dakota Cole (132) and Zach LaFavor (285) and a decision from James Berg (120), who defeated the No. 4-ranked wrestler in Class A.

Trojans 63, Tigers 16

New Prague dominated in a dual against Section 2AA foe Delano, winning the first seven matches and 11 of 14 matches to take the win.

The Trojans had falls from Alex Nelson (126), Cole (132), Richard Reinartz (138), Derrick Kvam (145), Giles (160), Preston (195) and Danny Saunders (220), forfeit wins from Tanner Rutt (106) Tyler Steele (113) and LaFavor (280), and a decision by Berg (120).

Trojans 35, Lakers 22

New Prague won the annual Highway 13 Collision, Friday, Jan 18, bringing home the traveling trophy that goes to the New Prague-Prior Lake winner for the first time in its five-year existence.

The Trojans trailed 16-12, but then won three straight matches to take a 23-16 lead and held on from there.

Highlight of the evening was Griffin Parriott's 3-2 four-overtime decision over Tanner Johnshoy, ranked No. 3 in Class AAA at 113 pounds.

Winning by fall for the Trojans were Berg (120), Preston (195) and Saunders (220). Maruska (160) and Giles (170) earned major decisions, while Morgan Parriott (152) and Cole (132) joined Griffin Parriott in winning decisions.

Trojans 53, Bengals 6

New Prague won 12 of 14 matches in scoring a 53-6 win over Blaine in the first round of the Tartan Duals Saturday, Jan. 21.

Winning for the Trojans by fall were Berg (120), Brandon Hallet (132), Cole (138), Joe Heinz (145) and Giles (160). Griffin Parriot (113) won by technical fall, and decisions were scored by Knutson (106), Nelson (126), Davis (152), Cody Sirek (182), Preston (195) and Saunders (220).

Trojans 54, Raiders 19

New Prague defeated Roseville 54-19 in the second round at Tartan.

The Trojans jumped to a 42-0 lead in the contest.

Winning by fall for New Prague were Knutson (106), Griffin Parriot (113), Berg (120), Nelson (126), Cole (132) and LaFavor (285). Maruska (170) had a forfeit win, Davis (152) scored a technical fall, Morgan Parriott (145) had a major decision and Reinartz (138) registered a decision

Saturday's championship match featured two teams listed as Lean and Mean in Class AA by The Guillotine. The Trojans proved to be a little meaner as they used a strong start to gain an early advantage and held on for the win.

Knutson started with fall at 106, followed by a technical fall by Griffin Parriott (113) and a fall by Berg (120). Nelson (126) followed with a major decision.

Grand Rapids scored a technical fall, but the Trojans came back with a pair of wins, a major decision by Reinartz (138) and a decision by Morgan Parriott (145).

The Thunderhawks won the next three matches to make it 28-15, then the Trojans chose to forfeit at 182, making it 28-21.

The strategy paid off for New Prague as Sirek and Preston each moved up a weight and scored first period falls, making it 40-21. New Prague won the match by a 40-24 score.
