Wrestlers top Sabers for Missota win

The New Prague Trojan wrestling team upped its season record to 13-2, winning their Missota Conference opener at Shakopee Thursday, Jan. 5.

The win was big for the Trojans, since the Sabers were ranked No. 10 in Class AAA. The Sabers are the defending Missota Conference champions and were the pre-season favorites to repeat.

The Trojans will be in action twice this weekend. They host Chanhassen/Chaska and Waterville-Elysian-Morristown/Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton in a triangular at 5 p.m. Friday, Jan 13, then travel to Le Center for the Bezdichek Invitational, hosted by Montgomery-Lonsdale/Le Center beginning at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 14. Other teams in the meet are Delano, Le Sueur-Henderson, Mankato East, Medford, River Valley and Triton.

The Trojans host Maple River and Delano in a triangular on Thursday, Jan. 19.

Against Shakopee, New Prague jumped to an 18-4 lead, winning three of the first four matches by fall.

The Sabers narrowed the lead, coming to within six points, at 32-26 after getting a fall at 195 pounds. But sophomore Nathan Preston sealed the win for the Trojans with a fall at 220 pounds in 1 minute, 19 seconds.

Each team won seven matches, but the Trojans benefitted from five pins and one technical fall. The Trojans gave up only one fall, but they also forfeited at two weights.

Other Trojans winning by fall were Nick Knutson (106 pounds), Griffin Parriott (120), James Berg (126) and Morgan Parriott (145). Logan Giles (182) won by technical fall, 20-4, and Keyandre Davis (152) took a 9-8 decision.
