Seth Ambroz headed to Czech Republic, then Omaha
Seth Ambroz of New Prague will be headed to the Czech Republic and Slovakia next month to compete with the U.S. U-18 team in an eight-nation hockey tournament next month.
Ambroz was one of just two Minnesotans named to the team. The other was Max Everson of Edina. The team will play in the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament August 9 through 14. Other nations in the tournament are the Czech Republic, Finland, Russia, Canada, Slovakia, Sweden and Switzerland.
After playing as an eighth and ninth grader at New Prague High School, Ambroz played the last two seasons for the Omaha Lancers of the United States Hockey League. He has signed a letter of intent to attend the University of Minnesota and had planned to enroll this fall after graduating from high school a year early. However last weekend it was reported that Ambroz will be heading back to Omaha for a third season. According to the Star Tribune, Gophers' coach Don Lucia advised Ambroz, a 6-foot, 3-inch, 210-pound forward, that he couldn't guarantee him a spot on the top three lines because of a large number of forwards who are already on the team. The article said Lucia felt Ambroz would benefit more from another year at Omaha, where he scored 22 goals and 27 assists in 56 games last year.
Ambroz, the son of Bob and Sue Ambroz of New Prague, has been working out with his future Gophers' teammates this summer as well as playing in a 3-on-3 league with pro players. He will be eligible for the NHL draft next season, and is widely regarded as one of the top five players available. He has also been playing baseball with the St. Patrick Irish in the Dakota-Rice-Scott Baseball League.
