Lonsdale Aces honor Darrell Vosejpka

Former Lonsdale Aces player and manager Darrell Vosejpka was honored Friday, July 16, prior to the Aces' game with St. Patrick.

Vosejpka was among about 20 former Lonsdale ballplayers who were introduced before the game began. The announcer saved Darrel for last and talked about his career.

Vosejpka began playing with Lonsdale's Dakota-Rice-Scott team in 1972, at the age of 14. He spent most of the next 38 years in a Lonsdale uniform, as a player, coach and manager, before retiring earlier this year.

Vosejpka was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the seventh round of the MLB draft in 1975, three picks before the Boston Red Sox chose future hall-of-famer Wade Boggs. He spent one year with the Royals' Gulf Coast League team before giving up his pro baseball aspirations.

PA announcer Milt Trnka read off a list of Darrell's accomplishments that he has done for Lonsdale baseball, both on and off the field. He then announced that Vosejpka's No. 17 was being retired. "No player will ever wear that number again for the Lonsdale Aces," he said.

Darrell's sons, Derek and Brad, members of the team, presented a wooden cutout of a jersey with Darrell's number 17 that will be hung on the fence of the stadium.
