‘Shut your yaps’ Choir teacher recorded addressing class

An audio recording circulated online last week of a Tri-City United Montgomery choir teacher disciplining his class. The recording was secretly recorded by a student and shared on social media and other news outlets.

In the audio, the teacher expresses frustration over some students’ behavior.

At one point, he tells the students “shut your yaps,” and calls some students in the class "dumb butts,” before adding, “I know you’re better than that.” At one point, the teacher says the class is "the worst class he has ever taught,” and went on to say, “You don’t know what choir is like, what it can be. No wonder we don’t have any leaders in this class. They’re sick and tired of the crap that’s going on.”

The teacher then asks the students to be polite, for cooperation, common sense, and to not be disrespectful.

TCU's Superintendent Lonnie Seifert responded Tuesday when asked for comment regarding the video. Seifert stated, “The district was made aware of the recording late Friday night and is doing an appropriate investigation into it. At this time, the district has no other comment.”

Reaction to the online post has ranged from supportive of the teacher to others vowing to pull their students from the class.
