High School League moves football and volleyball to spring

Today, the Minnesota State High School League voted on what the options are for the high school fall sports season amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Their decisions affect football, volleyball, and the traditional spring sport season. They also voted on adjusting the regular fall sports seasons, limiting contests and competors.

This comes after thousands of students had their 2020 spring seasons canceled due to the global health pandemic. The MSHSL canceled the winter sports seasons in mid-March, during the Girls State Basketball Tournament and before the Boys State Basketball Tournament, due to the global health pandemic.

In an email to TCU families, Activities Director Chad Johnson went over some of the information.

Officials voted 13-5 in favor of moving football to the spring, from March 15 to May 15, with a 12-week season that includes six regular season games, localized games and fan attendance to be determined.

MSHSL officials voted to have a condensed Volleyball season in the spring, which will feature a 20 percent reduction in weeks, 30 percent reduction in matches and no scrimmages, tournaments and games between two teams only.

The MSHL's fall and winter sports seasons will have the same dates. The spring seasons will go from roughly March 15 to May 14, and a fourth summer season will go from May until early July.

Fan attendance and coaching at activities will be determined at a later date. Inside activities will NOT be allowed to have fans at this time.

The MSHSL also has yet to finalize any plans for fall adapted activities.

If a school is ever required to go to distance learning, sports will immediately be moved into a virtual activity.

At this time, no decisions have been made on State Tournaments or a culminating event.

Johnson said the Activities Office will get the online registration set up ASAP.  Students, parents and guardians will be notified via a JMC email Blast when it is ready.

The only student-athletes who will need physicals will be 7th graders or first time participants.

Specific details on students daily involvement will be coming out with the instructional plan. Contact Johnson at cjohnson@tcu2905.us with questions.
