Hoops for Hunger Tournament: Lady Titans split two games at home tourney

It was one win and one loss for the TCU girls basketball team during their home tournament held Dec. 29 and 30 in Montgomery.

The Titans were defeated by Waterville-Elysian-Morristown, 67-45 on Thursday. They came back to defeat JWP, 54-51 Friday evening. WEM was the only team in the tourney who were undefeated.

Sophomore Sophie Whipps scored 10 points off the bench and Ella Schmeising added nine points against the Buccaneers.

"We did not take care of the ball very well when executing our offense. We had 14 turnovers in each half and WEM did not even press us the whole time. These turnovers led to 28 more possessions for the opponent and gave them too many extra shots,” head coach Don Marcussen said. “We did shoot OK from 2 pt. distance (40%) but not from 3 pt. distance (16%). Our free throw shooting was one of our strong points in this game as we made 11-14 for 79%. Sophie did a nice job for us off of the bench putting in 10 points.
