Ken was born on July 2, 1939 to Arnold and Emily (David) Schleis at the David family farm in Trebon.  He attended Holy Redeemer Catholic School and Montgomery High School.  Ken was united in marriage to Luella Miller on September 17, 1960 at St. John Lutheran Church in Montgomery. Ken worked at Zoff Chevrolet in Montgomery for 11 years, AAA Representative for 2 years and was awarded as being named the #1 Salesman in Minnesota, worked at Seneca in the wash-up crew for 10 years, firefighter for the Montgomery Fire Department for 11 years, US Army Reserves for 8 years, Water Superintendent for the City of Montgomery for 33 years, 50 years working in the business that he started himself, Schleis Tree Service & Nursery, which included tree trimming and removal, landscaping, stump grinding, tree moving and maintaining his own tree nursery. He also repaired radiators and laid sod whenever a job came up. He donated trees to the City of Montgomery, Veterans Memorial in Montgomery, Memorial trees at the Golf Course in Montgomery, Holy Redeemer School in Montgomery, Friedens Lutheran Church in New Prague, Catholic Church in Lexington, and many trees to Pioneer Power.

Ken and Luella’s home has always been in Montgomery and the last 44 years they have resided on the land that has been in Ken’s family for over 100 years. On their 40 acres, they raised many different beautiful animals including peacocks, swans, golden pheasants and even 2 baby deer that became pets.

He loved being in nature, mowing the lawn and making the yard look its best. He enjoyed entertaining friends and family. He liked to play the guitar. Through the years, he had fun traveling with Luella and friends to many places, with some favorites including Hawaii, Spain, the Czech Republic and wintering in the Rio Grande Valley, Texas. In his later years, woodworking filled his time (making bird feeders, swings, oriole feeders, welcome signs and crosses), watching the news and golf, fishing, going to Pioneer Power and talking on the phone with his buddies. He took great pride in his family. He was an amazing husband, dad, grandpa, great-grandpa and a true friend to many.
