Memorial Day Program has new times, musical selections

This year’s Memorial Day program has new times. The church service at Most Holy Redeemer Church will begin at 8 a.m. The parade from the church to the American Legion Post 79 for the program begins at 8:45 a.m. The program at the Legion begins at 9:15 a.m.

The program will also include prayers by Father Victor Valencia and Pastor Jason Pollington, musical selections by John Grimm and the Montgomery Area Veterans Honor Guard, and the Tri-City United High School Choir and Rianna Doyle.

It will also include the roll call for deceased veterans. When the name of a deceased veteran is called, close relatives should rise and a member of the American Legion or V.F.W. Auxiliary will give that person a tribute.

The speaker for this year’s program will be Shawn Schloesser, retired U.S. Army Warrant Officer 4. He is a native of Le Center and a graduate of Austin Peay State University (BS) and Murray State University (MPA).

He joined Region Nine Development Commission in February after serving eight years on congressional staff for Congressman Tim Walz. While in that position, Schloesser provided outreach and engagement with veterans, service members and their families, legislative policy development and implementation oversight with the House Veterans Affairs Committee, and community engagement for rural vitality and disaster support across the 21-county region.

Prior to that role, Schloesser served for 23 years in the U.S. Army. He retired from military service in 2009 as a Chief Warrant Officer 4.

While in the Army, he served in a variety of positions as both a Non-Commissioned Officer and Warrant Officer at locations such as Fort Gordon, GA, Fort Campbell, KY; Seoul and Teague Korea, Heidelberg Germany and Chièvres Belgium.

Shawn is an alumnus Policy Fellow at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs, alumnus of the Minnesota Agriculture and Rural Leadership program at Southwest Minnesota State University, and past board president of the Arts Center of St. Peter.

He lives in St. Peter with his wife and two teenage sons.

The program will end with the salute to deceased veterans, the playing of “Taps” and the Retirement of Colors.
