County historical society meets Oct. 19

LCHS Goals: Elysian Museum, technology updates, artifact inventory

Le Sueur County Historical Society (LCHS) has been busy.

The society, which aims to collect, preserve, and tell the story of Le Sueur County, will be holding its October meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 19 in New Prague at the New Prague Public Library. The meeting starts at 6 p.m. CDC guidelines are followed.

According to LCHS Board member Ruth Collins, restoring the society’s Elysian Museum property, updating technology at the Genealogy Center, and artifact inventory and relocation are the top items on LCHS’s long list of projects.

LCHS has been working on grant applications for the restoration of the Elysian Museum, which remains one of the society’s main goals, Collins explained. However, LCHS has been advised to apply for accessibility grant funds at a later date because the Minnesota Historical Society accepts a single grant per applicant for large structures.

Once the Elysian Museum is properly restored, the society plans to use the old schoolhouse to display artifacts and restored artwork, along with historic classrooms exhibits.

Improving technology at the society’s Genealogy Center, which is located in Elysian, is another one of LCHS’s bigger goals. Members of LCHS’s Volunteer Technology Committee will visit neighboring counties’ genealogy centers to gain insights on the technologies and systems being used. Based on their findings, the committee will submit a proposal to the society’s board, but any technology updates will need to be donation based.
