Lonsdale council dissatisfied with construction work

From a broken sanitary sewer service line to brand new sidewalks that are cracked, the city councilors of Lonsdale are not pleased with work completed by contractors this year.

“It’s not acceptable,” Lonsdale Mayor Tim Rud said of the emergency repair work needed on the sewer line. “We should not let this slide.”

Rud is referencing the work completed by Quam Construction in July on a section of sewer line on Fourth Avenue Northeast that caused a home to be uninhabitable and required emergency repairs.

According to Joel Erickson, Lonsdale City Administrator, Quam was making repairs to the line and wye joint at the sewer main. The resin used in the process caused the service line to the home to be one inch in diameter compared to the normal four inches.

When contacted to fix the problem, Erickson said Quam would not fix the problem they created nor assume financial responsibility for it.

Other contractors were also contacted to make the emergency repairs but were too busy, did not want to do the work, or did not return phone calls from city staff, Erickson said.

Rud Construction, of which Mayor Rud is the president, stepped in and agreed to do the work in the amount of approximately $26,500.

In total nearly $50,000 has been spent by the city to deal with this issue, Rud estimates.

Rud and the council has asked that Erickson work with the city attorney on the matter.

“I would not be agreeable to letting them off the hook,” Rud said.

Rud is also not pleased with the work completed by contractors on the Main Street project that took place over the summer and continues to be ongoing after the expected project completion date passed.

“This is not acceptable,” Rud said. “(WSB) did not control their contractors or subcontractors.”
