Mary Young, 81

After 25 years apart from her husband Bill, and 59 years from her infant son James, Mary Margaret (Guttenberg) Young, has reunited with them in heaven.

Surrounded by her loving family, Mary, 81, of Montgomery, passed away peacefully at Mayo Clinic Health System, Mankato on Sunday, April 16 after a sudden illness.

Mary was born on April 21, 1941, in Fargo, ND, to Casper and Eleanor (Landsberger) Guttenberg. She attended St. Mary’s Grade School, and graduated from St. Mary’s Central High School in Bismarck.

Mary met her “Prince Charming” and future husband William “Bill” Young after her friend asked her to go out with him to see if he was a nice guy. Mary said yes, and eventually married him at the Church of St. Anne in Bismarck, where they made their home and raised their two boys.

Mary’s professional life ranged from helping students, to selling electronics, sewing machines, and jewelry. She worked at St. Mary’s Grade School, then a successful career for several decades at Sears Roebuck and Co. in Bismarck.

Despite Bill’s hesitation, she worked at Zales Jewelry Store where her employee discount always made him nervous!

During their marriage, Bill and his beloved “Poopsie” spent many weekends and vacations at their cabin on Blue Lake. Mary loved visiting with their lake friends, sunbathing, and watching the sun set from the cabin’s addition that Bill and the boys built.

Mary and Bill loved each other. He often showed his affection over the course of their marriage in a sweet way in a variety of places. In the canned vegetable isle of a grocery store, he would whisper to his bride, “Have you ever been kissed by a can of peas?” Mary would respond no, then receive a kiss from Bill.

After his passing on September 28, 1997, Mary lived briefly in Hawaii, then moved to New Prague, to be near her boys, Garrett and Wade. She worked part time at Marquardt Jewelers in New Prague before retiring and moving to Montgomery.

Mary loved her family, jewelry, and finding name-brand clothing at bargain prices. She could spot a designer purse or dress from a mile away.

She loved gardening, roses, and all types of flowers, and she used her keen eye for color when she decorated for all seasons and holidays.

Blessed to have been part of her life, and surviving her, are sons, Garrett (Katherine) Young, Minnetonka, Wade (Bonnie) Young, Montgomery; sister, Claudia Fiedler, Montgomery; brother, Tom Guttenberg, Glasgow, MT; sister-in-law, Karon Hacanson, Bismarck, ND; grandchildren; Sam, Hannah and Isaac Young, Mecca Nightingale, Paul, Kate and Drew Kinkade; her beloved dog, Morky; sister-in-law, Norma Guttenberg, Glasgow MT; brother-in-law, Jim Schulte, Jamestown, ND; and many nieces, and nephews.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband; son, James in infancy; sister, Yvonne Schulte; brother, Ron Guttenberg; sister-in-law, Donna Guttenberg, and her parents.

A Celebration of Life will be planned for a later date.
