New Market advances at State Tourney

The New Market Muskies advanced to the third round of the Minnesota Class CBaseball Tournament with a 1-0 win over Luverne

Sunday, Aug. 25. The Muskies, ranked No. 1 in the state, are the lone Dakota-Rice-Scott team remaining in the tournament.Prior Lake lost its second round game to Fergus Falls 7-2. New Market will face New London-Spicer at 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 30, at Maple Lake.The winner will play at 11a.m. Sunday, Sept. 1, in Delano, with the winner of that game playing at 4:30 p.m. in Maple Lake in the semifinals.The tournament concludes Monday, Sept. 2, with the championship game scheduled for noon in Delano. Muskies 1, Redbirds 0 One run was enough for the New Market Muskies as they defeated the Luverne Redbirds 1-0 in a second round game at the State Class C tournament in Maple Lake Sunday, Aug. 25. New Market’s Tony Voccaand Luverne’s Brandan Alfson locked horns for seven innings, with neither giving up a run. Vocca allowed just three hits and struck out five, while Alfson allowed five hits and struck out four. Alfson, a draftee from Pipestone, yielded a run in the bottom of the eighth.Kyle Bergstrom got a leadoff single and Nick Rost sacrificed pinch runner Justin Firpo to second. Brett Herber connected with a base hit thatscored Firpo just ahead of the throw to give the Muskies a1-0 lead. Matt Lane, draftee from Faribault, had come on in the top of the eighth and he was credited with the win. He allowed one hit and struck outfour. Herber had two of New Market’s five hits, with Kyle Bergstrom, Dan Phyle andTyler Bergstrom getting the others. Three of those hits came in the fateful eighth inning.

Hurricanes 7, Mudcats 2 Prior Lake bowed out ofthe tournament with a 7-2loss to Fergus Falls Saturday,Aug. 24, at Delano. Prior Lake took a 1-0 leadin the top of the second on an RBI single by Lucas Pumper. Fergus Falls answered with a four-run second inning and would not relinquish the lead. They led 5-1 when Prior Lake’s BJ Benz singled in Luke Weber in the top of the eighth. Fergus Falls answered with two in the bottom of the inning to make the final 7-2. Jake Anderson was the winning pitcher for FergusFalls. Eric Hinnenkamp,draftee from Long Prairie got the save. Ben Morrison took the loss for the Mudcats, with Ted Christian, draftee from Montgomery, pitching two innings of relief. Jerad Lehrer had two hits for PriorLake.
