City reopens disc golf course
The New Prague Chamber of Commerce and the city of New Prague held a ribbon-cutting ceremony, Friday morning, Sept. 13, to reopen the disc golf course at Southside Park.
The disc golf course had originally opened in 2001, said City Planning and Community Development Director Ken Ondich.
“We went from having a nine-hole disc golf course to a 12-hole disc golf course,” said City Planner Kyra Chapman.
The work also included the addition of tee pads, where people tee off with their plastic discs to get the disc into a chain metal basket or hole. Chapman said landscaping was also done around the tee pads and new way-finding signage was added to help people know where each hole is.
One of the three baskets was a practice one upgraded to the 11th hole on the east side of the park, Chapman said. She noted two new baskets were added, one on the east side of the park, the other on the west side of Southside Park. Chapman was able to find similar baskets online to add to the course. “It was hard to find ones that were similar to 20 year old baskets,” she said.
Work on the disc golf course was aided by a grant from the Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation’s Small Town Grant, said Ondich.
