Cold stretch costs Trojans in 1AAAA opener
The New Prague Trojan offense stalled late in their Section 1AAAA girls basketball quarterfinals at Lakeville South Wednesday, Feb. 27. That led to a first-round exit by the Trojans, who lost 57- 47 to the Cougars.
New Prague had a slow start, with a couple turnovers and missed shots. That led the Cougars to an early 7-0 lead.
But the Trojans fought back and tied the game on a layup by Kate Seymour. Amanda Giesen gave the Trojans their first lead at 11- 10 with 10 minutes remaining. The lead changed hands several times and the teams went into the locker room tied 26-26.
New Prague was hitting its shots to open the second half. Bethany Vasecka hit a pair of threes to put the Trojans up 34-30. Later, Emily Russo hit a pair of free throws to give them a six-point lead.
But from there, the Trojans went cold, as South went on a 12-0 run to take a 46-40 lead. Vasecka hit a layup to stop the run, but the Trojans could not get any closer, as the Cougars closed on a 23-7 run, making the final 57-47.
“I thought we played pretty well in a great playoff atmosphere,” Coach Luke Swedberg said after the game. “Unfortunately, down the stretch South made some plays that we did not match.”
