Doubles sweep lifts Trojans over Faribault

A sweep of the three doubles matches helped the New Prague girls tennis team to a 5-2 win over Faribault at the Farmington Triangular Saturday, Sept. 17.

At No. 1 doubles, Anna Sharkey and Savannah Ryburn won 6-1, 6-2. at No. 2 doubles, Ellie Thomas and Brooke Mensing won 6-0, 6-0. At No. 3 doubles, Abby Pint and Ava Farrell won 6-0, 6-1.

Also winning against Faribault were Carley Motz at No. 3 singles by a 6-3, 6-2 score and Iris Trygstad had the match of the day, winning three tiebreakers - 6-7(6-8), 7-6 (10- 8), and 13-11.

Farmington pulled out a 4-3 win with four of the seven matches coming down to third set tiebreakers.

Payton Peterson lost at No. 1 singles, 4-6, 3-6. Ella Blackford lost at No. 2 singles, 1-6, 4-6. Carley Motz lost at No. 3 singles in three "sets" (they played two regular sets. If they split, they played a 10-point tiebreaker in lieu of a 3rd set) 6-1, 0-6, 6-10. Iris Trygestad won handily at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 6-4.

The Trojan doubles teams fared a little better. At No. 1 doubles, Anna Sharkey and Savannah Ryburn won 6-7, 6-4, 10-8. Maggie Giesen and Ellen Thomas lost in three sets at No. 2 doubles 3-6, 6-4, 7-10. No. 3 doubles Brooke Mensing and Ava Farrell won 6-1, 4-6, 10-5.

In exhibition doubles, New Prague won two matches. Jeri Sackett and Kirsten Overgaard won 8-1 and Hayden Champine and Natalie Kraft won 8-0. Benilde-St. Margaret’s 7, New Prague 0

The 14th ranked Benilde-St. Margaret’s tennis team shutout the Trojans 7-0 Tuesday, Sept. 13.

Carley Motz, Iris Trygestad, Ellie Thoms, and Abby Pint were defeated in singles action. The doubles teams of Ella Blackford/ Payton Peterson, Anna Sharkey/Maggie Giesen, and Savannah Ryburn/Brooke Mensing lost in straight sets. Chaska 5, New Prague 2

The Trojans came so close to beating Chaska Thursday, Sept. 15.

Three matches went to a third set! Unfortunately, they lost all three so the final team score was 5-2 in favor of Chaska.

No. 2 doubles (Brook Mensing & Savannah Ryburn) won 6-2, 6-0, and No. 3 doubles (Anna Sharkey and Maggie Giesen) won 6-1, 6-2. Ava Farrell lost a really close match in 3 sets 7-5, 6-7 (8-10), 6-7 (2-7), as did the first doubles team of Payton Peterson and Ella Blackford 4-6, 6-4, 3-6. Carley Motz lost #1 singles 6-7 (5-7), 0-6, Iris Trygestad lost No. 2 singles 0-6, 2-6 and Mallory Jirik lost No. 3 singles 3-6, 6-7 (1-7). New Prague 6, Southwest Christian 1

The Trojans won their second match in a row with their victory over Southwest Christian Monday, Sept. 19. Payton Peterson lost No. 1 singles 1-6, 3-6. “The rest of the singles players moved up a spot due to an illness on the team and rocked it,” head coach Jamie Schoenbauer said.

Carley Motz won at No. 2 singles 6-0, 6-2, Iris Trygestad won at No. 3 singles 6-1, 6-3, and Ava Farrell won at No. 4 singles 6-0, 6-2.

The doubles teams swept through No. 1 doubles had to make it exciting by going three sets. Mandi Becher and Anna Sharkey pulled out the win 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4). No. 2 doubles Brooke Mensing and Savannah Ryburn won 6-2, 6-0 and No. 3 doubles Maggie Giesen and Ellie Thomas won 6-4, 6-3.
