Elko New Market’s roundabout at the intersection of Main Street and Natchez Avenue, which are also Scott County Highways 2 and 91, respectively, is on schedule. If the work on the partial multi-lane roundabout continues as scheduled the roundabout will open on Tuesday, Aug. 25.

City Administrator Tom Terry said a ribbon cutting for the project will be held after lights are installed.

The roundabout is a joint project between the city and Scott County that had been in the planning stages for more than a year. The roundabout is to address safety concerns, reduce existing traffic delays and plan for future growth at the intersection. The main contractor on the reconstruction of the intersection has been Ryan Contracting Company.

Before the project began the city and the county discussed whether the intersection should remain open. It was decided the intersection should be fully closed to traffic during construction, as there was no opportunity to construct the roundabout while maintaining traffic flow through the intersection. The intersection closed around mid-June with two detours set up. One detour is off of Interstate 35, which sends motorists first east and then west on surrounding roads to eventually hook up with Scott County Highway 2. The second detour is off of Natchez Avenue, north of the city, with the detour connecting with Scott County Road 62, and then going west to hook up with Scott County Highway 2.
