Marilyn Hudspeth, 71

Marilyn A. Hudspeth, age 71, of New Prague, died peacefully in the presence of her loving family on Sunday, August 19, 2018 at St. Gertrude’s Health and Rehabilitation Center. Marilyn was born on October 23, 1946 in Algona, Iowa, to Le Roy and Alma (Grandgenett) Stoffel. She graduated from Bishop Garrigan High School and following business school, worked at Mayo Clinic in Rochester. She married Thomas A. Hudspeth on June 14, 1969 at St. Cecelia’s Catholic Church in Algona and the couple eventually settled in New Prague.  Marilyn was an active member in St. Wenceslaus Church, coordinating the altar server program, serving as a Eucharistic minister, providing support during Capital Campaigns, and active in the discipleship program, Befrienders, and Hope House. Her volunteerism spread into the community as well with her dedication to Habitat for Humanity and commitment to Unbound.

Marilyn worked for a short time at St. Wenceslaus School, where she proudly sent all five children for their elementary years. Her second favorite job was as a receptionist at Hairchitects, a natural fit for her warm, uplifting, positive, funny personality.  But her favorite job was the pride she took in being a homemaker, creating a home filled with traditions that was warm and loving and continued until she took her final breath. She was a woman of deep faith, inspiring others to come back to church and finding their faith. She was also an avid reader, instilling a love of reading in her children and grandchildren and a proud member of her book club.  She enjoyed numerous trips with her daughters and those trips always had a theme involving Charlotte Bronte. Road trips in the convertible with Tom, her husband and love of her life, rounded out her travels. She was a noted calligrapher and an avid rock painter in the 80’s. The greatest joy in her life, however, was her grandchildren and she was the grandmother who was goofy, fun, engaged, and always loving.

Marilyn is survived by her children, Jim (Anh) Hudspeth of Shakopee, Ann (Jamie) Jerdee of Northfield, Katie (Dave) Bohn of Shakopee, Mary (Chris) Darling of Eagan, John Hudspeth (Jessica Feeney) of Fairmont; brother, Bob (Sue) Stoffel of Algona, IA; sisters, Shirley (Tom) Tuggle of Monterey, CA, Barb (Ron) Plathe of Rochester, MN, Jan (Denny) Thompson of Algona, IA; 11 grandchildren.  She is preceded in death by her husband, Tom on January 24, 2018; her parents.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, August 24, 2018 at 10 AM at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church with Father Kevin Clinton and Deacon Mickey Redfearn officiating.  Visitation will take place Thursday from 4-8 PM and Friday morning from 7:30 – 9:30 at Bruzek Funeral Home.  Burial will occur at St. Wenceslaus Cemetery followed by lunch at the KC Hall.  bruzekfuneralhome.com
