NPHS wins Metro West Conf. One-Act Play Festival

For the second straight year, New Prague High School won first place at the Metro West Conference One-Act Play Festival. There were five schools participating in the festival Saturday, Jan. 21, in New Prague High School’s auditorium.

New Prague’s production was “Eurydice,” by Sarah Ruhl. The play is a modern adaptation of the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, except it is told from Eurydice’s point of view.

Ben Thietje, director of NPHS’ one act, said the students beat out Chanhassen by one point.

Score totals for the festival were New Prague 6, Chanhassen 7, Bloomington Jefferson 8, Chaska 10 and Orono 14.

“The students did an absolutely fantastic job,” said Thietje.

He noted because of school going to distance learning or being called off because of inclement weather, the cast and crew were behind on rehearsals going into the festival performance.

“In fact, we hadn't even rehearsed it with all tech elements before Saturday,” said Thietje. “The students were a little nervous about that, but they focused on what they had rehearsed and pulled off a really amazing performance.”

Another aspect of the play that changed was some physical parts of Mikkal Hvidsten, who plays Orpheus, as he broke his collarbone while skiing a few weeks ago. In one scene,
