Several races in local elections

The filing for local elections closed at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 11, creating several races for the city councils in New Prague and Elko New Market. For the New Prague School Board there are six people running for five seats. Area residents will decide who will serve in the general election on November 3.

Three people running for mayor of New Prague. Current Mayor Chuck Nickolay decided not to run for reelection after serving for five terms over a 10 year period. Running for the position, which has a two-year term, are current council members Maggie Bass and Rik Seiler, plus former council member Duane Jirik. Bass currently serves as the council’s vice-president. Seiler is in his first term on the council. Jirik, a Scott County Sheriff’s Office deputy, served on the council before.

For the two New Prague City Council seats, that are four year terms each, there is a three way race. Incumbent council members running for reelection are Shawn Ryan and Bruce Wolf. They are joined by Brian Molitor.

For the New Prague School Board all four incumbents are running for reelection. They are Dennis Havlicek, Matthew Goldade, Kim Holden, and Jeanne Kubes. Goldade is the newest member as he was chosen in February of this year to fill out the term of Kytyn Schoenbauer. Joining them as a candidate is Dan Call.
