Sugar Rose Bakeshop is now open in New Prague

Sugar Rose Bakeshop opened at 801 First Street SE, in the East Town Plaza in New Prague, on Thursday, Jan. 3, in the spot that formerly housed Lady A’s Cupcakes. It was the final step in a long process that owner Jody Breathwaite hadn’t anticipated a little more than a year ago.

Breathwaite, daughter of Ken and Nancy Franek, graduated from New Prague High School in 2003 and after studying baking at Le Cordon Bleu Institute, she worked at Lunds and Byerly’s as a cake decorator and pastry chef for several years. She and a partner opened Cakewalk in Northfield in 2012, but Jody sold her share of the business when she moved back to New Prague. She had been working at the Oak Ridge Conference Center when she learned that the Lady A’s space would be opening up.

"I wasn’t planning on doing this a year ago, but I didn’t anticipate the opportunity would come to open my own shop in my hometown," she said. She signed a lease in October and spent the next few months remodeling and making changes in the kitchen so the building would pass inspection by the Department of Agriculture. She said the process took a lot longer than she had hoped, but she finally got the go-ahead to open in late December.
