Tennis team falls to Spartans, Cougars

The New Prague Trojan girls tennis team lost two matches last week, to Orono and Mankato East. 

The Trojans are preparing to wrap up the regular season over the next week. They were scheduled to host Delano on Tuesday, Sept. 17, and will host Hutchinson on Thursday, Sept. 19. On Monday, Sept. 23, they travel to Farmington and on Tuesday, Sept. 24, they host Hutchinson for their final home meet of the regular season. The Wright County Conference championships are scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 26. The meet will be held at Delano High School, which is a change from the original schedule. 

 The Section 2AA team tournament begins Tuesday, Oct. 1. 

Spartans 7, Trojans 0,   New Prague traveled to Orono Tuesday, Sept. 10, and lost a 7-0 contest. 

 “Orono is a very talented and experienced team,” said Coach Luke Swedberg. “Although it does not reflect it in the score, I did like how we competed. We never gave up and our effort for the whole match was at a high level.”

 The No. 1 doubles team of Emily Russo and Sarah Berg had the best showing, losing their match 6-3, 6-1. The remaining teams all lost, with only Ashley Hanson at No. 3 singles and Rachel Russo/Brenna Solheid at No. 3 doubles managing to take a game in the straight set losses. Other players were Kianna Howard, Libby Hummel and Tess Girard at singles and the team of Maddie Dorner/Maggie Nielsen in doubles. 

Cougars 4, Trojans 3, New Prague traveled to Mankato East for a makeup contest Monday, Sept. 16, and lost a 4-3 decision.
