Tennis team splits matches to start season

The New Prague Trojan tennis team opened its season last week, splitting a pair of matches. The team traveled to Faribault and won a 6-1 contest, then traveled to St. Peter and lost 7-0.

The Trojans were scheduled to compete indoors at Hutchinson Tuesday, April 17. Their next scheduled match, weather permitting, is Thursday, April 19, at home against Waseca. They are scheduled to host Northfield Friday, April 20. They go on the road to Mankato East Monday, April 23, and to Mound Westonka Tuesday, April 24.

Trojans 6, Falcons 1 On a cold Thursday evening, with snowbanks surrounding the tennis courts, the Trojans opened their season with a 6-1 win over the host Faribault Falcons.

At No. 1 singles, senior captain Jack Guerrette battled through a tight match, losing in three hard-fought sets, 7-6, 4-6, 11-9.

The rest of the Trojans all won, with Evan Zimmer, Jacob Wilson and Sam Lambrecht winning in singles in straight sets. In doubles, Justin Klegstad and Jacob Anderson won in three sets, 6-7, 6-2, 10-8, while the team of Luke Schoenbauer and Zach Sirek and the team of Isaac Tietz and Thomas Carrol both won in two sets.

"The comeback win for Justin Klegstad and Jacob Anderson at #1 doubles was particularly impressive, as they pulled out a tight third set tiebreaker," Coach Ben Hilding said.

Saints 7, Trojans 0 A late addition to the schedule, the Trojans traveled to St. Peter in the early stages of a snowstorm and battled the No. 4-ranked team in Class Aindoors at Gustavus Adolphus College. The host Saints claimed a 7-0 win.
