ENM begins looking toward 2019 street work with expo

The Elko New Market City Council began looking toward street work for 2019 at its Thursday, Aug. 23, meeting as it directed city staff to begin preparations for a Streets Expo.

City Engineer Rich Revering of the firm Bolton & Menk presented the proposal. The expo is to bring information on current events related to streets to the public in an informal and interactive way. If the council agreed to the idea, city staff would begin planning and advertising for the event, which would be held on a weekday evening in the latter half of September. The expo would allow residents to find out what projects are being planned for, the estimated costs for the projects, what special assessments would be needed and which residents would be impacted by the work and the assessments.

The expo would not only cover 2019 work, but also future projects. Tables would be set up with information about the 2020 Roundabout Project, traffic operations change requests and safety tips for pedestrians and bicyclists.

City Administrator Tom Terry said city staff had been discussing having the expo for about year to a year-anda- half. He noted a water expo the city had about its water plant project had been fairly well attended.

Mayor Bob Crawford agreed the expo was a good idea considering how street projects can be costly.
