Shirley A. Scherz, 82

Shirley A. Scherz, age 82, of New Prague, died peacefully, surrounded by her family on Sunday, September 9, 2018 at Mala Strana Rehabilitation Center in New Prague.  Shirley was born on January 6, 1936 in the Hiller farmhouse near Weaver Lake to Donald W. and Lillian M. (Rice) Hiller.  She graduated from Anoka High School.  Following high school, she went to Minnesota School of Business to learn shorthand.  She worked many jobs but most notably, worked her way up to being a Manager for Tupperware Direct Sales Marketing.  She married M. Clifford Carlson in June of 1954 at Osseo Church of the Nazarene.  Following his death in 1982, she married her second husband, Richard D. Scherz in March of 1991 (also at Osseo Church of the Nazarene).

Shirley was very active at Heritage United Methodist Church in New Prague, where she cleaned the church weekly, enjoyed potlucks, and was part of the prayer chain.  She loved participating in her many Bible studies.  She and her first husband sang in the “Billy Graham Crusade Choir” in Minneapolis.  During her short stay at Mala Strana, she even sang hymns with her visitors.  Shirley had a “servant’s heart” and was quick to praise Jesus.  She was active in the exercise and fitness class at Philipp Square and enjoyed playing bingo there.  A shopping trip to Burnsville every third Thursday also helped her connect with people.  She enjoyed crossword puzzles, jig saw puzzles, and playing Scrabble.  She was never happier than when she could play a quick game of “Sorry” with her grandchildren and surround them with hugs and rapid fire kisses.

Shirley is survived by three children, Linda (& Dean) Sivertsen of Ballwin, MO, Colleen (& Mark) Gerber of Monticello, Brad (& Kamy) Carlson of New Prague; two sisters, Marilyn (& Jim) Goatley of Aitkin, Sandra Davis of Boise, ID; six grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.  She is preceded in death by husbands, Rev. M. Clifford Carlson on November 16, 1982 and Richard Scherz on August 23, 2013; parents; brother Douglas Hiller; sister, Beverly Griepp; great-granddaughter, Rachel Gerber.

Funeral services will be held Monday, September 17, 2018 at 11:00 AM at Heritage United Methodist Church (200 280th St. East, New Prague) with Pastor Garth Heckman officiating.  Visitation will be held at church one hour prior to service with lunch to follow.  Burial will occur at Lakewood Cemetery, Minneapolis at 2:30 PM. bruzekfuneralhome.com
