WEM wins first-ever Sub-Section Championship

The WEM girls’ basketball team played one of its best defensive games of the season Monday, March 2 in the South Sub-Section Championship.

All year long the Buccaneers have been a very good defensive team. In their biggest game of the season, their defense again was superb.

WEM limited Springfield to 18 first half points and 44 in the game. a game in which the Bucs won 57-44.

The championship was the first in school history after losing five other times in the Sub-Section title games.

WEM (25-4) will now face Sleepy Eye-St. Mary’s (25-2), the North Sub- Section Champions, who defeated Buffalo Lake- Hector/Stewart, 72-54 Monday. The two teams will play for the Section 2A Championship Friday, March 7 at 6 p.m. at MSUMankato.

“Defensively our effort was fantastic all night. We knew (Sydney) Hauger was their stud and she was going to get her points but we wanted to make it tough on her and I thought we did that for the most part,” WEM head coach Ty Kaus said following the game. “But besides a couple breakdowns that I think were more fatigue related we really did an excellent job.”

Hauger, who entered the game averaging 24 points, matched that average. The other six players managed only 20 points.
