Wabasha-Kellogg comes back to end WEM’s season in Section 1A Championship

No team had been able to shut down the potent WEM softball offense, until Thursday, June 10.

The Lady Bucs averaged eight runs per game in 2021 heading into the Section 1A Championship game played in Austin.

Wabasha-Kellogg All-State pitcher Julia Schmoker put together two outstanding performances in helping W-K upset the Buccaneers, 9-1 and 4-2, to win the Section 1A Championship.

WEM advanced to the Section 1A Championship game by scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh to defeat Wabasha-Kellogg in the winner’s bracket finals Tuesday, June 8.

This set up the championship in which W-K would have to defeat the Bucs twice to win the Section title.

Schmoker allowed only one earned run in the two games and struck out nine batters. She mixed a fastball, rise ball, and change up which kept the Buccaneer batters off balance much of the night.

“She is a great pitcher. She keeps you guessing,” WEM head coach Crystal Lamont said. “We were starting to hit her (Tuesday) so I was confident how we would come out (Thursday). She just pitched two fabulous games.”
