Westphal wins second individual championship Grizzly girls win Gopher Conference Championship
After finishing second the last two years, the WEM/JWP girls cross country team claimed the Gopher Conference Girls Championship Tuesday, Oct. 15 at Prairie Ridge Golf Course in Janesville.
Freshman McKenzie Westphal won her second individual championship and all five Grizzly runners placed in the top 15 overall.
The Grizzlies scored 39 team points in winning. Blooming Prairie scored 50, Randolph 62, United South Central/Alden-Conger 100, and Medford 107. Hayfield, NRHEG, and Triton each had runners but did not field a complete team of five runners.
Maple River won the meet last year and Blooming Prairie placed third.
Westphal won the conference individual title as a seventh grader and placed fourth last year. She defeated NRHEG 8th grader Julieann Wobbrock who placed third last year and Blooming Prairie sophomore Gloria Hernandez, who placed second in 2023.
Westphal completed the 5,000-meter course in 20:27. Wobbrock was second in 20:34. Hernandez was third in 21:06. Last year’s champion was Sophia Stencel of Maple River. The Eagles are no longer in the Gopher Conference.
