Rice County Veterans Service Officer Tracy McBroom will be this year’s Memorial Day speaker.

Memorial Day, which will be observed on Monday, May 28, commemorates all men and women who have died in military service for the United States.

Around the country, many people visit cemeteries and memorials on Memorial Day, and it is traditionally seen as the start of the summer season.

Montgomery’s program will follow its traditions beginning with Mass at Most Holy Redeemer Church at 8:15 a.m. It will be followed by the parade from Holy Redeemer to First Street to Elm Avenue to the American Legion Post 79.

The program there, sponsored by the American Legion Post 79, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5340 and the Montgomery Area Veterans Honor Guard, starts at 9:30 a.m.

This year’s speaker at the program will be Rice County Veterans Service Officer Tracy McBroom.

McBroom was born and raised in Pemberton, MN. After graduation she joined the USAF and worked as an air traffic controller. She was stationed in England, Germany, Italy, Delaware, Texas and retired out of California.

While in the service, she received her bachelor’s degree through Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, majoring in professional aeronautics with a minor in safety.

After retirement, Tracy and her husband, Tom, made their home in Elysian. She has four children, Dallas, Landry, Grant and Troy. She has been the Rice County Veterans Service Officer for the past nine years.

The program will also include prayers by Father Victor Valencia and Pastor Jason Pollington, musical selections by the Tri-City United High School Band and  John Grimm.

It will also include the roll call for deceased veterans. When the name of a deceased veteran is called, close relatives should rise and a member of the American Legion or V.F.W. Auxiliary will give that person a tribute.

The program will end with the salute to deceased veterans, the playing of “Taps” and the retirement of colors.
