Open House highlights new police station; inefficiencies of current one

The refrigerator at the Montgomery Police Station is located in the building’s garage, next to the squad cars, found-bicycles, and street sweepers stored by the Street Department. Open it and you’ll find lunches and beverages for the on-duty officers and administrative staff.

You’ll also find evidence from police stops or arrests.

Inside of the station, water stains mark several ceiling tiles, and boxes of other evidence are sometimes piled in the closet that houses the officers’ evidence lockers. The 12x10 room where officers write reports consists of two computers, the department’s body camera and other equipment, a pizza oven, a microwave oven and other storage boxes.

The department that is housed in a building constructed as “temporary” 30 years ago highlighted its inefficiencies and presented the plans for a new facility north of the existing building on Lexington Avenue at an open house on Thursday night and Saturday morning, March 3 and 5.

Police Chief Nathan Hintz gave tours and pointed out the many areas that are not compliant with the state, or the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

“We had a big marijuana bust a couple of years ago and the whole office smelled like marijuana, so we had to put in an exhaust fan,” Hintz stated. “When it rains hard, we get water coming through the building. When OSHA came through here, they couldn’t even cite what was wrong because so much was wrong.”
