School board adds June 1 for snow make-up day

Students in the Tri-City United School District will make up one of their snow days by attending an extra day of school on Friday, June 1.

The decision came at Monday’s Tri-City United School Board meeting.

Superintendent Teri Preisler told the board there were four school closings due to weather on January 22, January 23, March 5 and April 3. She said state statutes dictate the number of hours students must be in school and that TCU students have met all of those hours. That includes at least 425 hours of instruction for a kindergarten student without a disability, 935 hours of instruction for a student in grades one through six, and 1,020 hours of instruction for a student in grades seven through 12, not including summer school. The school calendar for all-day kindergarten must include at least 850 hours of instruction for the school year.

“We are well beyond the minimum hours, even with lunch and late starts,” Preisler said.

The issue, she added comes with the teachers’ contracts with the district. According to Preisler, the TCU Education Association contract allows for one day of school closure without making up the day/time, which is always the first day (January 22).
