Students take action to be good
A group of kids are taking kindness to the next level when they organized a clothing drive for the residents of the poorest county in the United States.
Twenty students in Shaun Robbins’ seventh and eighth grade advisory class at TCU Montgomery Middle School organized and promoted a clothing drive over the past several weeks. Their efforts acquired 11 full boxes of warm clothes and blankets for the residents of the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota.
Robbins said the students got the idea for a clothing drive last month during an anti-bullying campaign. He said they were tired of talking and wanted to take action.
“They were tired of putting up posters,” he said. “They said let’s stop TALKING about being better people and BE better people.”
They began helping kitchen personnel clean the lunchroom. As Thanksgiving approached, the conversation came up about why they’re thankful. Robbins said they decided they can’t be thankful for what they have if they don’t know or can’t appreciate what they have.
