The Tri City United boys basketball team played three Section 2AA opponents last week and had some heartbreaking results.
The Titans dropped a 53-50 contest to Norwood-Young America (NYA) Tuesday, Jan. 24. NYA entered the game with a perfect 6-0 Minnesota River Conference record. TCU rebounded with a 58-37 win over NRHEG Thursday, Jan. 26. The following night Le Sueur-Henderson (LSH) edged the Titans, 64-61.
Missed free throws were key to the overtime loss to the Raiders. TCU missed 15 of their 27 shots from the charity stripe.
“We played stellar defense and gave ourselves an opportunity to win the ball game, but ultimately couldn’t get enough shots to fall down the stretch,” head coach John Rumpza said.
Tri-City United shot the ball 16-of-39 from 2-pt range, and just 2-of-7 from 3-pt range. While the Titans only collected three steals on the night, they also turned the ball over only 13 times, which really kept them in the game.
Only seven Titans saw the floor on Tuesday. Steve Odenthal led the Titans in scoring with 16 points, going 6-of-6 from the field and 4-of-7 from the free throw line. Reggie Vosejpka followed him with 10 points and snagged 16 total rebounds. Hank Holicky and Nolan Readmond each recorded 8 points.
In the win over NRHEG, the Titans jumped out to an early lead, but the Panthers were able to hang around in the first half. TCU went into the locker room at halftime with a double digit lead. Coming out of the half, the Titans stepped on the gas pedal to extend their lead, and they never turned back. The Titans outmatched the Panthers in the paint, and ended up shooting over 50 percent from inside the 3-pt arc.
Reggie Vosejpka led the team in scoring, and.... Pick up the Feb. 2 edition of the Messenger to read the full story.
