Waseca returned the opening kickoff 82 yards for a touchdown and added two more first quarter scores in a 49-7 win over Tri City United Friday, Sept. 16 in Montgomery.

“Obviously you never want to start the game giving up a touchdown on the opening kickoff. It is hard to get back momentum after starting like that,” head coach Matt Collins said. “Despite the score we did some good things in this game and have some things we can build on.”

The Titans had drives in Waseca territory in both the first and second quarters that ended on turnovers by the Titan offense. Turnovers were a big difference in the game as the Titans had four turnovers that all directly led to Bluejay touchdowns.

Tri City United got on the scoreboard in the third quarter on a 74-yard touchdown pass from Henry Schendel to Chris Johnson. The PAT by Rafael Balcazar was good following the touchdown.

Schendel was 9-of-19 passing for 142 yards with a touchdown.

Chris Johnson had three catches for 113 yards and a touchdown for the Titans.

Cole Franek led a balanced Titans rushing attack with 25 yards on 7 carries.

Defensively, Kellen O'Keefe led the Titans with 8 tackles. Marco Reyes, Jose Tappo, and Hank Holicky had tackles for loss for the Titan defense.

“We need to clean up the turnovers on offense, they were a big part of the difference in this game. Defensively we need to tackle better and we need to be better on special teams. Waseca is as good of a team as we will see this year and one of the favorites in our section,” Collin said. “After Friday's game, we have a good idea of what areas we need to improve on if we want to compete with them in the postseason. We will get back to work this week and hope to play much better this week against our rival Belle Plaine."
