The purpose is the same, but the event that celebrates survivors, remembers those who lost their battles, and raises money to fight cancer, will look a little different this year.

Sara Slavik, one of the organizers for the Le Sueur County Annual Relay for Life, said they have adjusted the relay so it will be more of a family event. It will be held Saturday, Sept. 25 instead of the middle of July when it was held on a Friday.

It’s no longer being held all night. “We have moved the date of Relay this year to September and to a Saturday in hopes that we can have it be a more family-oriented event and get more people out to see what Relay for Life is all about,” she said. “The times have changed too, as this year we are doing it from 3:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.”

Slavik said this year there will be two bounce houses, the dunk tank with TCU football players in it, a duck pond, and some other outdoor games. Also, the Le Center ambulance will be on site with their mobile trailer for tours and first aide if needed.

Slavik said even though some things have changed, the Relay’s purpose remains consistent: raise money to stop cancer.

“Cancer is such a horrible disease and I don't think there is a single person out there who has not been touched by it in some way, whether they are a caregiver, a survivor, or a friend,” she stated. “Our main goal with Relay for Life is to raise money to help eradicate this horrible disease.”
