County board does not vote on sewer ordinance

Residents who live on the German-Jefferson Lakes and Lake Emily in Le Sueur County voiced their displeasure at a proposed ordinance which would have required sewer inspections every 3-5 years.

The Le Sueur County Board held a public hearing Tuesday, Oct. 22 to discuss the ordinance. More than two dozen individuals were in attendance and nearly a dozen commented during the hearing.

It was quite apparent these individuals were not in favor of the ordinance. A similar ordinance passed for the lakes of Francis, Rays, Sakatah, and Tetonka in the Waterville/Elysian area.

A similar ordinance will be presented for Lake Gorman and Lake Volney.

The purpose of the ordinance was to establish a rigorous compliance program for the inspection and enforcement of established standards for wastewater treatment systems within the areas surrounding Lake Emily and German and Jefferson lakes to ensure continuous compliance.

Linda Good, who lives on East Jefferson, said the Minnesota law does not require an inspection of the septic tank before a property is transferred to the buyer. She wondered why the county was looking to exceed the standards already in place by the state.

“All landowners within the county should have to comply,” Good said. She also pointed out there are 100 lakes in the county.

Scott Haas, owner of Summer Breeze Resort on Big Jefferson, asked why not all the lakes were included and why the 350 foot compliance area.

“Why are you punishing people around the lake and not the whole county?” Haas asked. “Other counties don’t do it.”

Jim Cink who lives on Lake Jefferson agreed with Haas about the ordinance being county-wide.

“If we are going to have ordinances let’s have it for the entire county, not just us,” Cink said. “I don’t understand. Why do we pick on just the lakes?”
